Apex student plans STEM conference for Triangle middle, high school girls.(WNCN)

APEX, N.C. (WNCN) — A local high school student is working towards her own future and the futures of other young women in the Triangle.

Sixteen-year-old Ive Jones, a junior at Apex Friendship High School, is a competitive dancer and award-winning choreographer — and she's also planning a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) conference for middle and high school girls in the Triangle.

"I think I'm fortunate enough to go to a school where those programs are encouraged but I don't think that's common at every other school and not every school has those opportunities, especially under-served schools where there is just a lack of STEM education," said Jones. WATCH VIDEO

For most of her childhood, Jones said she wanted to be a doctor, but after meeting Dr. Mandy Cohen, the North Carolina Secretary of Health and Human Services, she said she wants to play a role in helping keep people healthy on a national and global level.

The Young Women in STEM Conference is scheduled for June 8 at Hope Community Church in Apex.
